Honors

To be eligible for honors work, a student must be a women's studies major who has completed at least 18 credits of women's studies course work with a 3.3 or better GPA, and who has an overall GPA of at least 3.0. Applicants for honors apply to the program director. Admission is dependent on the student's finding an appropriate faculty advisor willing to supervise the work. This option serves primarily those who are considering going on to graduate study. Students admitted to do honors work plan to take a two-semester sequence of honors tutorials (WoSt 498-499).

WoSt 498 consists of intensive directed literature review and research on the student's chosen topic, under the close supervision of a faculty advisor who evaluates the work. In WoSt 499, the student completes a substantial honors paper based on the first semester's research, and presents the research results before an honors committee to be appointed by the program director. The committee together with the student's faculty advisor evaluates the honors project.

The student receives three credits for each semester of honors work, and each semester's work is graded separately. To qualify for departmental honors, the student must:

  • successfully complete both semesters of honors work
  • complete and present the paper to the committee
  • receive an evaluation of high distinction for the project.

Meeting General Education Requirements

For students who matriculated with fewer than 30 credits in Fall, 2000 or Spring, 2001, and for all students matriculating in Fall, 2001 and thereafter (i.e. all students under Curriculum "B"), courses with a "G" prefix meet the Critical Analysis requirement. G100-level courses are designated "First Year Seminars"; G200-level courses are "Intermediate Seminars."

If students who matriculated prior to Fall, 2000 with fewer than 30 credits (those under Curriculum "A"), have not yet completed their 2-course Core requirement, they must do so by completing one course at the G200 level (Intermediate Seminar) during academic year 2001-2002.
