Pre-Collegiate Scholars

HCOP annually serves approximately 50 Boston Public Schools students, in the sixth through the tenth grades. While any student living in Boston and/or attending a Boston Public School may apply, admission preference is given to middle school students attending the Gavin and McCormack Middle Schools and to high school students enrolled at Dorchester Academy; Edward M. Kennedy Academy for Health Careers; Tech Boston Academy; Burke High School; Excel, Odyssey, and Monument High Schools; West Roxbury High School; and Madison Park High School.

The Health Careers Opportunity Program is comprised of two components:

The Summer Institute

  • An intensive seven-week program in which students attend classes in math, science, reading and writing, public health, and health careers awareness.
  • Classes meet Monday through Friday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm.
  • Students receive a stipend for their participation during the summer session.
  • The 2012 Summer Institute is tentatively scheduled to run from June 25th to August 10th.

The Academic Year Program 

  • HCOP Scholars continue to explore the various careers in medicine and public health through workshops, guest speakers and internships. These activities will be scheduled at the University at least twice monthly.
  • Participants receive academic support, such as tutoring and advising at the University.
  • HCOP offers tutoring to all of its participants, Monday to Thursday, from 3:00 to 6:30 PM, and Friday until 5:00 PM.
  • HCOP Scholars engage in college awareness activities, field trips, and community service/volunteer opportunities.

Please read and follow the instructions carefully. The information requested of you is necessary to process your application for admission to HCOP. This application must be filled out COMPLETELY and returned to the HCOP office. Only applications that are filled out completely will be given consideration for admission.
