Handling and Care of Peroxide Forming Compounds
and Nitro Compounds
![]()
Peroxide-forming compounds and Nitro compounds are found throughout laboratories at the University. If you must use these chemicals close attention to their condition, age and state. In a two year period (FY1994-FY1995), the University spent approximately $100,000 to remove, stabilize and dispose of these types of chemicals. These expenditures could have, and must be avoided in the future.
This section contains background information on explosive and shock-sensitive chemicals. There are two general categories of these compounds, peroxide-forming compounds and nitro compounds. The general information includes common lists of these compounds for easy reference. A procedure for utilizing peroxidizable chemicals (including examples of required labeling) and nitro compounds are also contained within this section.
The Environmental Health and Safety office provides technical and disposal services for peroxide-forming and nitro compounds. For additional assistance including disposal services, call the University's Environmental Coordinator, Zehra Schneider Graham at 7-5445.
