Employee References

UMass Boston’s standard practice is to provide very limited information on current and former employees unless requested otherwise by the employee with a signed release. The purpose of this policy is to balance the value of providing employee information to outside parties with the need to minimize the University’s risk of legal liability.

All inquiries for employment verifications or references should be directed to the Human Resources Department. Callers asking for employment verifications and/or references on former or current employees are given only employment dates and positions held. If an employee (current or past) requests that a reference or other verification of employment be provided, such request should be put in writing and provided to Human Resources.

With the employee’s signed authorization, the employee’s earnings information may be released. Managers should consult with Human Resources whenever employees request references beyond the standard employment data.
