Small Necessities Leave Act

M.G.L. Chapter 149, Paragraph 52d defines the Small Necessities Leave Act (SNLA). The SNLA grants eligible employees a total of 24 hours of unpaid leave during any 12-month period over and above the leave granted under the FMLA.

The 24 hours of leave provides by the SNLA may be taken for any one of the following reasons:

a. to participate in school activities directly related to the educational advancement of your son or daughter, such as parent-teacher conferences or interviewing for a new school

b. to accompany your son or daughter to a routine medical or dental appointments, such as check-ups or vaccinations

c. to accompany an elderly* relative to routine medical or dental appointments, or appointments for other professional services related to the elder’s care, such as interviewing at nursing or group homes

You may substitute the unpaid time with any time you have accrued at the time of your leave. The Act does not require the University to provide paid sick leave or paid medical leave in any situation where we would not normally provide such leave.
