Smoke-Free Workplace Policy
Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 270, Section 22, requires all employers in the Commonwealth to provide a smoke free environment for all employees working in an enclosed workspace. That law also prohibits smoking in public buildings. Accordingly, smoking at UMass Boston is strictly prohibited in all work spaces, common work areas, classrooms, conference and meeting rooms, offices, elevators, hallways, medical facilities, cafeterias, employee lounges, staircases, restrooms, restaurants, cafes, coffee shops, food courts and university vehicles. The law applies to all employees, students, clients, consultants, contractors, and visitors.
Complaints about violations of the smoke-free workplace law may be made to the Department of Human Resources. The law also permits employees to file a complaint directly with the Department of Public Health.
