Department of Classics — Requirements
Classical Studies Major
- Classics 281 (Greek Civilization) and Classics 282 (Roman Civilization). With departmental approval, History 301 and/or History 302 may be counted toward this requirement.
- Six additional classical studies (CLSICS) courses. Courses in Greek or Latin beyond those required (in III below) may be substituted for up to two of the required classical studies courses. With Classics Department approval, one of these courses may be from another department.
- Two semesters of Latin or two semesters of Greek at a level appropriate to the student’s preparation, in accordance with posted departmental guidelines.
- At least three courses taken to fulfill the major requirement must be at the 300 level.
Classical Languages Major
- Ten courses in Greek and/or Latin.
- Any two classical studies (CLSICS) courses, or two additional courses in classical language.
- At least four of the courses taken for the major must be at the 300 level.
The Minors in Classical Studies and Classical Languages
Students majoring in another discipline may wish to deepen and enrich their understanding by minoring in classical studies, or in a classical language (Latin or Greek). These students must take a total of six courses to complete the minor program of study. The requirements for these minors are as follows:
Classical Studies Minor
- Six classics courses, of which no more than two may be at the 100 level, and at least two of which must be at the 300 level.
- Latin or Greek language courses may be substituted for up to two of the required six classics courses. Latin 101 or Greek 101 may only be counted if the second semester of the elementary sequence (Latin 102 or Greek 102) has also been taken.
- With departmental approval, one of the six courses may be taken in an allied department.
Classical Language Minor
- At least five courses in one of the classical languages.
- A sixth course, which may be in either classical language or classical studies. If taken in the student’s non-primary classical language, this course must be at or above the level of Latin or Greek 102.
