Criminal justice majors may count a maximum of six courses taken outside CLA toward the completion of major requirements. One CLA course may be taken on a pass-fail basis, but it may not be CRMJUS/SOCIOL L351, CRMJUS/SOCIOL L461, or CRMJUS/SOCIOL L462. The following three courses must be taken at UMass Boston: CRMJUS/SOCIOL L363—Corrections; CRMJUS/SOCIOL 465—The Police in Society; CRMJUS/SOCIOL L467—The Sociology of Law. Students who have taken similar courses at other schools should contact the Director of the Criminal Justice Program or the Chair of the Sociology Department to discuss course equivalencies.

The Minor in Criminal Justice

Students choosing to minor in criminal justice must complete four required courses and three additional criminal justice electives. The required courses include:

  1. CRMJUS L262 (Criminology)
  2. CRMJUS L467 (Sociology of Law)
  3. CRMJUS L321 (Race and Ethnic Relations) or CRMJUS L368 (Alcoholism: Etiology and Epidemiology)
  4. CRMJUS L363 (Corrections) or CRMJUS L465 (Police in Society)
  5. Any three elective courses (9 credits) from the elective areas contained in the major

Double-Counting

Students pursuing two majors within this department may double-count two sociology or criminal justice courses at the 300-level or above. They may also count as many 100- and 200-level courses as they have taken, as long as requirements for both majors have been satisfied. Students double-majoring in sociology and criminal justice need only take one senior experience course, which would be either SOCIOL/CRMJUS L461 or SOCIOL/CRMJUS L462.

Directed Study (SOCIOL 478 or SOCIOL 479)

At the invitation of the department, students may take individual directed study with emphasis on independent research. Students wishing to engage in directed study must submit a proposal for departmental consideration; this must be done by the end of the add-drop period in the semester in which they are doing the directed study. See guidelines in the department handbook or ask for them in the department office.
