Transfer Days!

General Information for Transfers

All of your previous college academic records are considered in the admission process. Along with the application for admission and the application fee, you should submit official copies of transcripts for all college courses completed at other institutions directly to UMass Boston Office of Undergraduate Admissions. If you have earned fewer than 24 college-level credits, you should submit an official copy of your high-school transcript and if you graduated from high school less than three years ago, an official copy of your SAT scores.
Typically, transfer applicants must have at least a 2.5 or higher cumulative grade point average to be considered for admission to the university.
Once your application is complete and all required documents have been received, your application will be reviewed and an admission decision made within two weeks. You may also bring all your materials into the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and meet with an admissions counselor to discuss your application process.

Joint Admission Program

The Joint Admission Program is designed to guarantee admission to UMass Boston to qualified students who successfully complete a designated associate's degree program at any of the 15 Massachusetts community colleges, Dean College or Quincy College. Through the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, graduates of the public community colleges qualify for the Tuition Advantage Plan, offering a one-third reduction of in-state tuition for up to four semesters at UMass Boston as long as a student's GPA stays at 3.0 or better.
If you intend to transfer to UMass Boston under this program, you must print and complete the Joint Admissions Enrollment Form (pdf) .

Undergraduate Transfer Credit

All of UMass Boston's colleges except the College of Nursing & Health Sciences award transfer credit for courses completed at regionally accredited institutions of higher education where the grade received was at least a C- . The College of Nursing & Health Sciences awards credit for courses where the grade was at least a C+.
Please note that:
  • To earn an undergraduate degree from UMass Boston you must complete a minimum of 30 credits at the university.
  • For the granting of all transfer credit, the course content must be considered equivalent to that offered by UMass Boston.
  • Within the university, each college reserves the right to determine individual course work that must be taken within the college.

Some additional transfer credit policies apply by college

In the College of Management, students must take validation exams to receive transfer credit for Financial Management, intermediate Accounting I & II, Organizational Behavior, and Principles of Marketing.
In the College of Nursing & Health Sciences, all science courses must have been completed within a ten-year period just prior to enrolling. Registered nurses may receive transfer credit for the N.L.N. exams with a minimum score of 50. Registered nurses will receive 38 additional credits for previous clinical work after successful completion of Nursing 360 (Transition to Baccalaureate Nursing). RNs must also submit a copy of their RN license to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
In the College of Public & Community Service an associate's degree may qualify for transfer of 25 competencies, five of which are provisional. Courses are transferred as competencies; one course equals one competency. Credit for prior learning through life experience may be granted through demonstration.
