Admission Requirements

Below is a list of materials required for freshman, transfer and international applicants. All supporting documents should have the applicant' s name, date of birth, address and social security number (optional) on them. All materials should be mailed to:

Freshman applicants

As a prospective freshman, you are required to submit all of the following materials in order to be considered for admission.
  1. Completed admission application
  2. Official high school transcript (or GED score report)
  3. Official copies of the SAT I or ACT score report if you have graduated within the last three (3) years
  4. A 500-word essay
  5. One academic letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor or teacher
  6. Currently enrolled high school students are required to submit a final high school transcript verifying graduation and successful completion of all requirements.
  7. Application fee of $40 for in-state residents or $60 for out-of-state residents. This fee cannot be refunded. Please send a check or money order, made out to the University of Massachusetts Boston. Applicants who attended UMass Amherst, UMass Dartmouth, or UMass Lowell as degree-seeking students are not required to pay the fee.

Transfer applicants

Transfer applicants are applicants who have attended other post-secondary institutions, regardless of the number of credits earned. Transfer applicants should have official copies of transcripts for all courses completed at other colleges and universities sent directly from the registrars' offices at these institutions to the UMass Boston Admissions Office. You are required to submit all of the following materials in order to be considered for admission.
  1. Completed admission application
  2. Official college transcripts from all institutions attended whether you are seeking to transfer credit or not
  3. Official copy of your high school transcript (or GED score report) if you have completed less than 24 transferable credits
  4. Official SAT I or ACT score if you graduated within the last three (3) years
  5. A 500-word essay
  6. Application fee ($40 for in-state residents; $60 for out-of-state residents). This fee cannot be refunded. Please send a check or money order, made out to the University of Massachusetts Boston. Applicants who attended UMass Amherst, UMass Dartmouth, or UMass Lowell as degree-seeking students are not required to pay the fee.
  7. If you are a non-immigrant international student transferring from another U.S. college or university, you must download, fill out, and return the Transfer Verification Form for Non-Immigrant Students.

International applicants

As a prospective international student, you are required to submit all of the following materials in order to be considered for admission.
  1. Completed admission application
  2. If you are applying as first-year student or if you have earned less than a total of 24 credits at other colleges or universities, you are required to submit an official high school record, leaving certificate, and/or graduation examination results.
  3. If you have attended any educational institution after high school, you are required to submit official transcripts of your academic record from each institution attended. If you are a non-immigrant international student transferring from another U.S. college or university, you must download, fill out, and return the Transfer Verification Form for Non-Immigrant Students.
  4. If the official transcripts of your academic record are not in English, you are required to send an English translation validated by an official public translator.
  5. Students whose first language is not English are required to submit test scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The TOEFL tests the student's written and oral abilities to function in the English language. Successful candidates are usually within the range of 550-600 (the 213-250 range on the computer-based test). Information concerning testing dates and places may be obtained by writing to TOEFL, Box 899-R, Princeton, NJ 08541, U.S.A.
  6. Students who have or will have completed secondary schooling in an American-structured school are required to submit an official Scholastic Aptitude Test I (SAT I) score or American College Testing (ACT) score.
  7. A 500-word essay
  8. For students applying for an F-1 visa, you are required to complete and submit the Certification of Finances form. The Certification of Finances form shows evidence of your ability to finance your education and living expenses during your stay as a student at UMass Boston. Your ability to document the funding available to you is a necessary part of your application for an F-1 student visa.
  9. Certified letter of support from your sponsor stating that your financial expenses will be handled during your duration of study at the university
  10. Return Certification of Finances form with a letter of support (in English) from your sponsor(s), unless you are using personal funds, stating the undertaking of all expenses for the duration of your studies here at the University. Also, include a current copy of your sponsor's bank statement
  11. Application fee of $60. This fee cannot be refunded. Please send a check or money order, made out to the University of Massachusetts Boston. Applicants who attended UMass Amherst, UMass Dartmouth, or UMass Lowell as degree-seeking students are not required to pay the fee.
Note: All test scores must be official, sent directly from the testing agency or printed on an official secondary transcript. The school code (CEEB code) for the University of Massachusetts Boston is 3924.
