Eric Mendes

"With over 90 different languages being spoken around campus, you’re almost guaranteed to meet a new friend from a different ethnic background!"

Hi! I’m Eric Mendes – a sophomore at UMass Boston. I’m currently pursuing marketing as my major with a minor in economics. I’m of Cape Verdean descent, but I was born and raised in Boston. I began my college career in 2007 at UMass Boston, and I’ve loved it ever since. Initially, the cost and location attracted me, but what kept me here is the diversity of the campus! With over 90 different languages being spoken around campus, you’re almost guaranteed to meet a new friend from a different ethnic background!

I also love being able to say that I’m a member of the Student Arts and Events Council (SAEC) and helped to create over 15,000 memories through campus events such as the mtvU Campus Invasion Tour 2008, which brought Wyclef Jean and Flo Rida to campus!

Erica Labrador

"The professors here are not only extremely knowledgeable but also encouraging."

Hey! My name is Erica Labrador and I'm a senior here at UMass Boston. In the Spring of 2009 I will receive a bachelor of science in marketing and a bachelor of arts in studio Art and dance. I am among the many transfer students here at UMass Boston. After attending one year of college in New York City, I decided to come to UMass Boston. The change has proven to be more than I could have ever expected. I chose UMass Boston because of the professors’ reputation and the student diversity. The professors here at UMass Boston are not only extremely knowledgeable but also encouraging.

UMass Boston has not only taught me so much while in the classroom, but I have learned about different cultures from those individuals who I have met. UMass Boston has truly shaped me into the person that I am today. When I’m not on campus, I enjoy going to the beach back home in Virginia Beach, VA, spending time with family and friends, and trying a variety of different foods.

Meaghan Tighe

"My favorite thing about UMass Boston has to be the people and resources. Whether it be studying abroad or tutoring, there's always someone available to help you!"

Hey, my name is Meaghan Tighe and I am junior here at UMass Boston. I am studying English and women’s studies and someday hope to write for a major women’s magazine in New York City. I am from Maine and moved to Massachusetts when I was 16. I transferred to UMass Boston after only one semester at a school in Maine and have found it to be the best transition I have ever made. The commute from my parents’ house in Mansfield is so easy and I get to keep in touch with my high school friends and also my college friends.

When I’m not in school, I love to spend time on the water either skiing or tubing; I also love roller coasters! My favorite thing about UMass Boston has to be the people and the resources. Whether it be studying abroad or tutoring, there's always someone available to help you!

Julia Murphy

"UMass Boston has proved to be fun, challenging and enlightening . . . "

My name is Julia Murphy. I am 19 years old and a sophomore here at UMass Boston. I am a biology major from Walpole, MA. I enjoy drawing, painting, shopping, camping and listening to music. My favorite things about UMass Boston are the faculty and Academic Support Office; they offer you unlimited resources to take advantage of. With my degree I would like to get involved with archeological or environmental research.

I've been living in Harbor Point, an apartment complex adjacent to UMass Boston, for one year and have found myself taking advantage of the convenience as well as the community there. UMass Boston has proved to be a fun, challenging and enlightening institution, and I’m sure I will discover newer and better experiences as I complete my time here.

Oceana Elia

"I currently live in Harbor Point Apartment Community -- only a five minute walk to the campus -- where I have made so many great friends who also attend UMass Boston."

Hey, my name is Oceana Elia. I’m 21 years old and I am a junior majoring in English and Secondary Education. I was born in California, but when I was two I moved to Worcester, MA. At the age of 14, I decided to leave and attend a boarding school on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. I really enjoy traveling to other countries, learning about different cultures and foods. I also enjoy cliff jumping and parasailing, swimming in the ocean and tutoring children and young adults.

I currently live in Harbor Point, which is only a five minute walk to the campus, so it makes it really easy to wake up and go to class. I have been living there for the past two years and have made so many great friends who also attend UMass Boston. Overall, UMass Boston is a wonderful school! The professor are not only helpful, but fun to learn from!

Lyns Hercule

"I like UMass Boston because although it is a large university, it maintains an intimate classroom setting which allows students to socialize and bond with their peers as well as their professors."

Hello! My name is Lyns Hercule and I am a proud student of UMass Boston. My graduating class is 2011 and I am currently a nursing major with a minor in Spanish and business. I currently live in Harbor Point Apartments, which has a partnership with UMass Boston. Since much of the population at Harbor Point are UMass Boston students, I enjoy my independence as well as comfortable dorm-like experiences with other UMass Boston roommates. The shuttle bus drops us off in front of Harbor Point for a shorter walk!

When I graduate from UMass Boston, I will pursue a career as a pediatric nurse. The facilities and education will without a doubt motivate and train students to become very successful nurses once they graduate. In my spare time, I like to lift weights and play basketball. I’m part of the Undergraduate Student Senate and often you can catch me enjoying many of the student life events that occur in the Campus Center. I like UMass Boston because although it is a large university, it maintains an intimate classroom setting which allows students to socialize and bond with their peers as well as their professors.
