Yes!

And our 10,132 undergraduates are living prrof.

They're ambitious, motivated men and women from all economic circumstances - from high school students and self-supporting transfer students to students of all ages who could afford a private college, but know an extraordinary educational value when they see it.

As one of New England's leading public universities, we are committed to keeping UMass Boston accessible to students. Because we are assisted by public funding, our costs are moderate, especially when you consider the quality opportunities awaiting you here and the prestige that a UMass Boston degree will carry for life.

Financial aid can make your education even more affordable. It does for more than 60% of UMass Boston students.
Are you eligible? You'll only know by applying for it - at the same time you apply for admission. Last year, UMass Boston awarded more than $40 million in financial aid, from federal, state, and institutional resources. Some of these dollars could be offsetting the cost of your education. Here's how financial aid works.

Financial aid typically consists of a "package" combining several forms of aid.
The types of aid are:

  • Grants, scholarships, and tuition waivers, which do not have to be repaid
  • Loans which are repaid with interest after graduation
  • Federal work-study awards, for paying jobs on or off-campus

Some aid awards are based specifically on financial need. Examples of these are:

  • Federal Pell and Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants
  • Stafford and Perkins Loans
  • Massachusetts State Scholarships

Other awards are based on merit:

  • demonstrated academic promise
  • excellence in the arts or
  • accomplishment in public or community service

Other awards are reserved for specific groups such as members of groups who are under-represented in higher education, graduates of Boston high schools or of a Massachusetts public community college.

Our knowledgeable and friendly financial aid staff are waiting to hear from you. They'll help to take the mystery out of financial aid and answer your questions - by phone or in person. Call 617.287.6300.
