Recycling & Sustainability
UMass Boston is strongly involved in being a sustainable campus. Learn, participate and be part of an environmentally responsible campus community!
The UMass Boston Campus Center opened in March 2004 was designed using L.E.E.D criteria and numerous energy efficiency and energy conservation features. It is a great example of a public university building built with sustainable design, daylighting, 'green' interior design and operations. We also provide recycling throughout the facility and encourage recycling through our vendors and guests choices.
Additionally,
- UMB recycles more than 500,000 lbs of paper, bottles & cans, cardboard, compost, furniture, and electronics every year!
- We compost all cafeteria dinnerware, food prep. waste, greenhouse and lawn/leaf collections.
- We recycle computers, batteries and other chemical and hazardous waste
- All UMB copy paper is 30% post-consumer recycled or higher
- UMB has an award winning water and energy conservation retrofit program
- We use cleaner natural gas energy and environmentally-preferable bus fuel.
- You can buy organic coffee and other sustainably developed food products at our cafeterias
- Campus benches are made from recycled plastic or durable metals, classrooms and offices use eco-friendly carpets and paints
- Only Massachusetts public university to sign the Talloires Declaration More info at www.ulsf.org
UMass Boston is also proud to be Massachusetts Sustainable University of the Year for environmental purchasing and sustainability. For more information on sustainability on campus, visit the Recycling and Sustainability website or write to umBe.Green@umb.edu.
