Mission and Key Goals
The Collaborative Institute for Oceans, Climate and Security engages scientists, policy makers, and security specialists in an effort to identify and communicate the critical interdependence among oceans, climate, and human safety–an interdependence that is not yet well understood within certain segments of the population. The institute also seeks to influence public and private sectors by creating new opportunities for problem solving, contributing high quality research, and establishing strategic collaborative relationships within and outside the university system.
The Collaborative Institute will enact its mission through three key strategies:
- Educate stakeholders and future leaders affected by, or responsible for maintaining, the complex interdependencies of oceans, climate, and security.
- Design and participate in strategic conferences and communications that strengthen key decision makers’ understanding of the national security implications of changing oceans and climate.
- Develop research, science, and technology that lead to effective place-based pilot projects, recommend appropriate mitigation and adaptation strategies to governments, and provide replicable models of research excellence.
