2013 Commencement Speaker
James Gustave “Gus” Speth, co-founder of the Natural Resources Defense Council and the World Resources Institute
Gus Speth has served as an advisor on conservation for Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. He has held multiple roles in the United Nations, working to protect Earth and its people from the effects of climate change. For ten years, he headed the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, and he is now professor of law at the Vermont School of Law. Speth most recently wrote the book America the Possible: Manifesto for a New Economy, a guide to political, environmental, economic, and electoral revitalization for the United States.
We will be honored by his presence, and in turn, we will honor him with a doctorate of laws, honoris causa, for his advocacy on behalf of our planet and its most vulnerable populations.
