Feel a connection to UMB at home with WUMB
If
you're not already a listener of WUMB-FM, you may be interested
to know that UMass Boston is the home of an award-winning professional
public radio station that broadcasts music, news, and public affairs programs
24 hours a day. Each year, more than three hundred musicians and other
guests come to the UMass Boston campus to appear on one of the station's
many shows. In addition, the station hosts and sponsors a variety of musical
events all over the state. Here are some things you may be interested
in knowing about WUMB.
- Listen at home, at work or in your car. The station broadcasts on
a network of five radio stations in Massachusetts: on 91.9FM in Boston,
Worcester, and Falmouth; on 91.7 in Newburyport; and, on 1170 AM in
Orleans. It has more than 75,000 people each week tuning in to listen.
- Listen anywhere across the globe. WUMB also broadcasts on the internet
at www.wumb.org and has thousands
of listeners in all 50 states and in 78 different countries around the
world.
- WUMB is recognized as the premier Folk Music Radio station in the
country.
- From "Folk Radio" and "Celtic Twilight" to
"Afropop Worldwide," "World Café" and
"Women in Music," WUMB offers one of the most diverse selections
of musical programming on the radio.
- Commonwealth Journal, one of WUMB's public affairs programs,
has won numerous awards for its in-depth analysis of issues pertaining
to Massachusetts, including from the Associated Press and the American
Cancer Society. Frequently, guests of the show are professors from the
UMass system, renowned authors, and local civic leaders.
- Each September, the station produces the Boston Folk Festival –
www.bostonfolkfestival.org
which draws nearly 10,000 musicians and fans to campus. Past performers
have ranged from Grammy-winners Emmylou Harris and KoKo Taylor to rising
stars such as Catie Curtis and Ellis Paul.
- The station also sponsors a Summer Music Camp, an internet auction,
and events like the Music Marketplace where you'll find thousands
of used CDs, Records, and DVD all in one place on campus.
- As part of the Radio Learning Project, WUMB works with the Communications
Studies Program to deliver real world skills--and credit--for
interested students; in addition, the station usually hires 10-12 work-study
students every year.
- On a first-come, first-served basis, students are eligible to attend
monthly concerts hosted by WUMB--intimate performances by recognized
artists.
- Look around campus during the school year for the WUMB Purple Van;
the station often does live broadcasting, giveaways, and even contests.
- WUMB is an affiliate of National Public Radio (NPR), Public Radio
International (PRI), and the Associated Press (AP).
- The station receives more than half of its operational funding from
over 6,000 listeners, and also receives financial support from organizations
such as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) and the Massachusetts
Cultural Council (MCC).
