Health, Fitness, and Well-Being

UMass Boston is committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of its students each and every day of the year. In addition, services are available to address the health and fitness concerns of the UMass Boston Community. Here's some information about what services are available to you:

Department of Public Safety

Located on the Plaza next to the Quinn Administration Building, UMass Boston's police officers are responsible for helping to provide a safe and secure environment in which the students, faculty, staff and visitors will be able to learn, teach, work and visit. Police officers have the same training and authority as police officers throughout the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The department is committed to a community based policing philosophy to accomplish this goal. Here are some of the many services that they provide:

  • At any time, anywhere on campus, the Department of Public Safety will provide escort services to and from all locations at no charge.
  • It happens to everybody--you lock your keys in the car or leave your lights on and drain the battery. If this happens to you, call the Public Safety and they'll provide free motor vehicle assistance.
  • If you call ahead for an appointment, the department's secretary will assist you in the capacity of Notary Public.
  • The Institutional Security Unit are security guards who wear brown uniforms and perform basic security services to the University, such as unlocking and locking of office doors, fire watch patrols, building security patrols and remain alert for public safety and security concerns. They are in constant radio contact with the Uniformed Police Patrol Division.
  • The Special Services Division provides services such as Domestic Violence Prevention which assists any person who is a victim of domestic or family violence.
  • The Bicycle Patrol Unit was designed to create a more approachable police officer, and to ensure that those places inaccessible by vehicle on campus could still be patrolled.

The Beacon Fitness Center

Located on the 1st floor of McCormack Hall, the Fitness Center offers a friendly, healthy environment for workout participants at all levels. Staff is highly trained and routinely sponsors clinics and instruction on personal fitness and health concerns. Programs offered include personal training, aerobics classes, massage therapy, orientations and fitness assessments among other services. Here's some of what you can take advantage of:

University Health Services

Located on the 2nd floor of the Quinn Administration Building, Health Services is supported by required health fees for all students who are part time or higher. Comprehensive programs are aimed at promoting optimal physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being.

  • Walk In Episodic Care- Treatment and evaluation of minor injuries and illness (no appointment or co-pay required), such as strains, sprains, abrasions, insect bites and stings, skin infections and rashes, cold and flu symptoms, gastritis, urinary tract and other genitourinary infections, minor lacerations and foreign bodies, minor burns.
  • Primary Care - The department offers evaluation and treatment of general health problems; early detection and referral of chronic conditions and illness; physical examinations. Other services include: Health promotion and disease prevention, health education and counseling, nutritional counseling, Immunizations, and referral to other UHS programs.
  • Medical Services- Services include an onsite laboratory, which performs a variety of tests on site as well as coordinates and reports results that require an outside laboratory referral.
  • Women's Health - Women's health services include annual examinations and PAP smears, birth control counseling, emergency contraception, sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention methods, pregnancy testing and counseling, evaluation and treatment of infections including sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Men's Health - Services include annual examinations, evaluation and treatment of infections including sexually transmitted diseases, birth control and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention methods, medical specialty services.
  • Dermatology- By appointment, dermatology can treat you for acne, skin lesions Biopsy/minor surgery, acute and chronic skin conditions.
  • Internal Medicine- Internal medicine services can assist with many problems, including endocrine disorders, gastrointestinal problems, blood & autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular & respiratory disorders.
  • Counseling Center - The Counseling Center provides services to any and all registered students without regard to the status and type of medical insurance. Services are provided by an interdisciplinary clinical staff, and by graduate and doctoral trainees functioning under direct supervision of licensed faculty and staff. Services are customized to meet the needs of the individual, the group, the family, or the couple, depending upon the need. Some of the common difficulties the staff can help address include:
    - adjusting to student life
    - balancing responsibilities
    - dealing with depression and/or anxiety
    - coping with life-stage dilemmas
    - resolving relationship issues
    - recovering from trauma
    - managing self-destructive patterns
  • Travelwell Services- Travelwell services can help you with the following travel services: Destination Planning, General Health and Safety: Altitude, Accidents, Crime, Jet Lag, Motion Sickness, Emergencies, Food & Water Precautions, Insect Precautions, Immunizations: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Polio, Yellow Fever, Typhoid Fever, Tetanus, MMR, Varicella, Post Travel Follow Up, Travel Medical Kits
