ARTS ON THE POINT
Quinn--02--034
Ever
wondered about that giant I-beam structure in front of the Quinn Building?
Its name is "Huru," and if you give Huru a second look, you
might see something interesting in the way it presides over the campus
drive, its top balancing, shifting, and moving ever-so-slightly in the
wind.
Huru is only one of a growing number of sculpture pieces by famous artists
brought to our campus as part of "Arts on the Point," a public
sculpture park dedicated to the cultural and intellectual enrichment of
the Boston area. Other sculptures you'll find standing boldly on
the main plaza, resting in hallways, hanging from buildings, and nestled
outside under the trees by the water.
In addition to the on-campus educational activities, Arts on the Point
has developed community education and outreach projects. These projects,
supported by privately raised funds, are designed in collaboration with
the staff of neighborhood organizations and community groups to address
their needs and interests.

OFFICE OF SERVICE LEARNING
Wheatley--4--175
Do you enjoy volunteering? Do you want to make a difference by helping
people in the local community? Check out the Office of Service Learning
and Community Outreach (OSCLO) to learn about volunteering and "service
learning."
Service learning is a great opportunity for students who want to engage
with the world around them by doing meaningful acts of service. It is
volunteerism taken to the next level; it's service connected to
your academic interests, done with the supervision of faculty. Imagine:
you can volunteer your time, providing needed assistance in the local
community; learn about a subject area (such as education, economics, political
science, or urban planning); apply what you've learned in the community
setting; and earn academic credit for the experience. OSCLO promotes and
expands service learning and community outreach programs at UMass Boston.
