Faculty and Staff Human Resources: Hiring Guide: Advertising

Posting and Advertising

For positions that require a search, ad-text is prepared within the HR Recruitment Office based upon information you provide and the recruitment strategy identified in consultation with HR and AA at the onset of the hiring process.

Once the level of search is determined, an advertisement should be written which includes a brief description of the position along with the required and preferred qualifications. For professional, bargaining unit positions, a statement of salary range will be made based on the Salary Administration Program level. The closing date for receipt of professional applications cannot be less than two weeks following the date on which the advertisement first appears in publication.

The accuracy of the content of all advertisements is the responsibility of the recruiting unit. However, HR will review carefully all final advertising copy before it is sent for posting or forwarded to the ad agency. HR will ensure that all recruitment advertisements carry the appropriate affirmative action/equal employment opportunity statement as required by law.

General Considerations:

All Classified positions are posted internally (for at least 10 calendar days). No external advertising is required unless the job is highly unusual and/or no qualified internal or general recruitment candidates have been found.

All Professional positions are posted internally (for 7 working days). If qualified candidates have not been found, or if the internal pool is found to be unrepresentative and AA requires that the search be extended, local external advertising will be initiated.

Simultaneous Advertising: When, in the judgment of HR, there is reason to believe that there will not be a sufficient pool of qualified internal candidates, simultaneous advertising -- internal and external -- may be recommended. In this case, the internal search proceeds and an external search is simultaneously undertaken.

All Faculty positions are advertised externally. No internal posting is required. All faculty searches are considered to be national searches.
