An Overview of the Division's Work

Among the activities the division undertakes to meet its goals are:

For prospective students

  • Increasing awareness of Umass Boston's undergraduate, graduate, certificate, and continuing and corporate education programs, and promoting UMass Boston as a first choice for prospective freshmen and transfer students, through publications, advertising, the world wide web, and on- and off-campus information sessions.
  • Supporting applicants to undergraduate programs with informative advising, fair admission decisions, and accurate transfer credit evaluations.
  • Removing barriers to enrollment through wisely conceived and managed admission, transfer credit, and financial aid policies.
  • Developing and supporting partnerships and articulation with two-year institutions to ease the transfer process and increase the potential for success of students transferring to UMass Boston.

For enrolled students

  • Sensitively administering need-based financial aid and merit-based scholarship programs for undergraduate and graduate students, and managing funds for these programs according to established guidelines and legal requirements.
  • Maintaining registration and course-scheduling processes that reflect the university's academic mission , address student demand, and help students progress smoothly toward graduation.
  • Disseminating course schedule information in print and on the web.
  • Maintaining student records and transcripts, reporting student grades, reporting student progress toward the degree, and certifying students for graduation.
  • Providing superior student services in such areas as student employment and housing.
  • Developing the technological capacity to enhance delivery of and access to all division-sponsored student services. (continues) (Mission and Overview page continued) For external constituencies
  • Developing appreciation in the general public for the quality of the academic experience at UMass Boston.
  • Enhancing the university's reputation in the general public with information about the faculty, particularly their research work and their contributions to their fields and communities.
  • Serving as liaison between UMass Boston and the media through official spokespersons and such publications as the Reporter's Guide.
  • Strengthening ties with high schools, community and two-year colleges, community agencies, and public and private organizations
  • Serving radio listeners, particularly the folk and roots music audience, through WUMB-FM, the university's public radio station; and promoting WUMB-FM and its relationship to UMass Boston. Through WUMB, producing such activities as Summer Acoustic Music Week in New Hampshire and the Boston Folk Festival on the UMass Boston campus.
  • Strengthening ties with alumni, particularly through UMass Boston, the university's alumni magazine. For UMass Boston faculty and staff
  • Informing the university community about enrollment goals and the achievement of them, shifts in market demand, competition with other institutions, and changing and emerging student interests.
  • Informing the university community about faculty research, administrative projects and policies, and noteworthy campus events through an internal newsletter, The University Reporter. For all constituencies
  • Developing publications, print and electronic advertising to support recruitment strategies and communication projects.

For external constituencies

  • Developing appreciation in the general public for the quality of the academic experience at UMass Boston.
  • Enhancing the universityÕs reputation in the general public with information about the faculty, particularly their research work and their contributions to their fields and communities.
  • Serving as liaison between UMass Boston and the media through official spokespersons and such publications as the ReporterÕs Guide.
