Arts on the Point
Arts
on the Point, a public sculpture park on the UMass Boston campus, is dedicated
to the cultural and intellectual enrichment of the Boston area through
the creation of a world-class venue for the exhibition of contemporary
sculpture. In addition to the on-campus educational activities, Arts on
the Point has developed community education and outreach projects which
seek to enhance an understanding of the role that the arts can play in
contemporary society.
These projects, supported by privately raised funds, are designed in collaboration with the staff of neighborhood organizations and community groups to address their needs and interests.
Current projects include: Art/Talks, a multi-visit educational tour of Boston's cultural institutions and local artists' studios; guided tours of the sculpture park available to school and community groups; the Teen Mentoring Program, pairing teen art students with University art majors; and annual Public Forums, where sculptures in the collection are discussed.
In addition, Artists-in-Residence projects, which place UMass Boston's art department faculty and students or community artists in local institutions, have included the creation of a history quilt with residents of Harbor Point and the renovation of the Edward Meaney Playground with students from the Little House Alternative School.
