The Office of Community Relations

collage of community relations activities, with campus in the backgroundThe Office of Community Relations serves as the liaison between the community and UMass Boston, representing the University in several community organizations and activities whose mission is closely aligned with that of the University. These include the Newmarket Business Association, the Boston Police Department, the Dorchester YMCA and the South Boston Boys and Girls Club.

The Office coordinates the outreach activities of the University's faculty and staff in addressing community issues, serving the community's interests, and responding to all community inquiries.

The Office is an active participant in local civic associations, as well as in the Columbia Point Association, which is composed of neighboring institutions on the peninsula. In addition, the Office provides and schedules all on-campus conference, classroom, and facilities space for community group activities. It supports community programs and initiatives that advance the interests of both the University and the community through donations of in-kind services, volunteerism, and assisting and co-hosting various community events.

Gail Hobin, the assistant vice chancellor for community relations is the primary liaison between the university and external community. Gail served as Director of Community Relations & Special Events from 1988-2002. She has worked at the University since 1985 and earned her both her B.A. and M.Ed. at the University of Massachusetts Boston. You can reach Gail via e-mail at Gail.Hobin@umb.edu.

Philip J. Carver,public affairs program administrator, brings a long history of civic engagement to his work at UMass Boston, where he serves as the university’s point person for developing, coordinating, and maintaining data management systems tracking community outreach activities and keeping senior staff informed about these efforts. In addition, Phil is UMass Boston’s liaison to the local business community, working with Main Streets programs, boards of trade, and local economic development agencies to provide university support for their economic development activities. Mona Connolly-Casper serves as administrative assistant in the Office of Community Relations. She is responsible for providing administrative support to the department and schedules space for non-academic use on campus. You can reach Mona via e-mail at Mona.Connolly-Casper@umb.edu.
