Office of Fellowship Advising

The mission of the Office of Fellowship Advising is to assist students in preparing high quality applications for competitive external fellowships and scholarships. We can help you if you are:

  • A current undergraduate student
  • A current graduate student
  • An alumnus or alumna who graduated in 2000 or later

These grant programs provide support for:

  • Undergraduate education in the US
  • Graduate education in the US and abroad.

Our services include:

  • Matching you to programs for which you are eligible.
  • Advising you about all aspects of an application (project statement, personal narrative, curriculum vitae, etc.)
  • Providing information to your faculty recommenders, holding mock interviews, providing required institutional endorsements.

Role of the “Faculty Representative”

Many scholarships and fellowships require you to apply through a designated faculty representative; even if that is not the case, we encourage you to make use of our assistance. If a fellowship you are interested in requires a faculty representative and UMass Boston is not currently listed as having one, please contact this office and we will make the appropriate arrangements.

Special Note on Deadlines

In many cases you will need to meet an internal campus deadline for application well before the external deadline set by the fellowship program. The purpose of the internal deadline is to allow time for candidates to be interviewed by the campus Fellowships Committee (for some fellowships) and to make final improvements to their applications.

Fulbright, Marshall, Rhodes Scholarships for Graduate Study during AY 2008-2009

Students who are interested in the Jack Kent Cooke, Fulbright, Marshall and Rhodes scholarships begin the application process in the spring for fall submission. Students must apply through a faculty representative for these awards. Advance work is important for meeting September, 2007 deadlines. Meet with Dr. Susan Gore for a preliminary consultation.

Morris K. Udall and Barry Goldwater Scholarships for Undergraduates

Applicants in the sciences and mathematics should in addition consider the Morris K. Udall Scholarship and the Barry Goldwater Scholarship, which both support undergraduate study.  Professor Steven Rudnick is the campus representative for the Udall.  Application for these awards may be initiated in the fall. Students must apply through a faculty representative for these awards.  All interested students should meet with Dr. Gore for a preliminary meeting before May 1 and should attend the spring 2007 fellowship open house.
