THE FINANCIAL AID APPLICATION (FAFSA) and STUDENT AID REPORT (SAR)

Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

To FAFSA Site

If you wish to apply for financial aid at UMass Boston, you must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the Renewal FAFSA.  The Financial Aid Services Office at UMass Boston strongly encourages students to use FAFSA on the Web or the Renewal FAFSA on the Web.  The Internet address for both FAFSA on the Web and Renewal FAFSA on the Web is www.fafsa.ed.gov.  Students who filed via FAFSA on the Web for the 2006-2007 academic year and did not indicate 4th or 5th year senior for 2006-2007 should have a Renewal Application on the Web.  Students with a Renewal FAFSA on the Web will be prompted to complete a Renewal after they enter their Social Security Number and the first two letters of their last name.  Students not prompted to complete a Renewal should complete the entire FAFSA on the Web.

The 2007-2008 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is based on 2006 tax information.  Students and parents (for dependent students) who will not have completed their 2006 Federal 1040 tax forms by mid-February are encouraged to use estimated 2006 tax information.  Remember, priority for university administered aid is given to eligible students with complete applications received and processed at the Central Processor on or before March 1.

Students may complete a FAFSA on the Web or a paper FAFSA application.  Please use care in completing the FAFSA for the correct academic year.

FAFSA on the Web

Go to the FAFSA on the Web address (www.fafsa.ed.gov) and complete the FAFSA on the Web.  If eligible, you will be prompted to complete a Renewal after entering your Social Security Number and first two letters of your last name.  Students not prompted to complete a Renewal should complete the entire FAFSA on the Web application.

The Title IV school code for UMass Boston is 002222.  To sign this year's application you may (1) print out the signature page, sign, then mail it to the processor, or (2) if you have a PIN from the US Department of Education, it may be used to electronically sign the application.   However, if you are a dependent student, you must still print the signature page and you and your parent must sign it before mailing the signature page to the processor.  If you have misplaced your PIN you may go to www.pin.ed.gov to request a new PIN.  A PIN is not required to file online.

Paper FAFSA Application

Dependent students who indicated they were not a 4th or 5th year senior in 2006-2007 and students who did not file the 2005-2006 FAFSA via the Internet will receive a pre-printed 2007-2008 Renewal FAFSA.  The renewal application will be mailed by the end of December to the address reported on the 2006-2007 FAFSA.  Complete the items that need to be updated (i.e. year in school, income and asset data) and then sign, date and mail to the consideration).  If you did not receive a Paper Renewal Application by December 31, 2006, secure a 2007-2008 FAFSA from the One Stop Student Administrative Services Center (Campus Center, Upper Level).  Complete and sign the application and mail it to the processor in the envelope provided.  The Title IV school code for UMass Boston is 002222.

Student Aid Report (SAR)

Approximately four to six weeks after you file your FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report.  Please review the information in this report carefully.   If all of the information is correct, you should keep the report for future reference.  If corrections must be made to the report please make your corrections as soon as possible and return them to the Department of Education.   Students with a PIN may make corrections via the Internet at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Contact Financial Aid Services with any questions you may have.
