Seminar Room Extends Legacy

Sandra Kanter Room dedication

Alumni of UMass Boston’s Higher Education Program joined with joined current students, the Chancellor and Provost, Dean, faculty and staff in early December 2011 to pay tribute to Dr. Sandra Kanter one of the program’s founding faculty members. The new Sandra L. Kanter Seminar Room is located on the first floor of the Wheatley building.

The warmth and laughter filled reception was reminiscent of the welcoming spirit that Sandy embodied. Her influential impact on UMass Boston and on the students she touched was fondly recollected by the guests, including the Chancellor. In his remarks he noted that Dr. Kanter was the catalyst which led him to teach a course in the College of Education and Human Development. “She knew how passionate I was about urban education issues, and she thought it was important for me to connect with future education leaders in the classroom,” he said.

In addition to Chancellor Motley, Provost Langley, Dean Wilczenski and others in CEHD , Sandy’s partner Leslie Lawrence and Higher Education Program Director Jay Dee shared reflections on the many ways Sandy’s great humor and sharp intellect shaped the university’s deep commitment to higher education scholarship.
