  • Carol DeSouza Student Support Fund

    The Carol DeSouza Student Support Fund was established to help undergraduate students with documented disabilities who wish to purchase adaptive equipment and/or technology. In the event that a qualified student is not identified, the funds may be awarded to a program on campus that provides services to disabled students.

  • Carol Hardy-Fanta Public Service Internship Fund for Women

    The Carol Hardy-Fanta Fund for Internships for Women in Public Service is an annual award made to up to two students in the university’s Graduate Program for Women in Politics & Public Policy who foster a greater understanding of the intersectionality of gender, race, ethnicity in politics and public policy within a public service setting. The student will receive a monetary award to work for up to nine months in a state or local government office or organization working on policy issues of concern to women who represent the diversity of women in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Students will perform the internship while enrolled in a regular class schedule. This is a prestigious award based on the overall merit of the student.

    The McCone Family Student Research Fund encourages inquisitive Biology students to pursue self designed research projects under the supervision of a Biology Department faculty member by providing financial assistance for supplies, source materials, travel, and other costs related to discovering, presenting, and disseminating their findings.

  • Merrill Fund for Caribbean Student Travel

    The Merrill Fund for Caribbean Student Travel offers students the opportunity to "travel and conduct research in the Caribbean under the guidance and supervision of university faculty members." The research will be directly related to hands on interaction in at least two Caribbean cultures with additional travel. This scholarship is made available to any student of at least junior level with a 3.0 GPA and demonstrated financial need who has been approved by the Department of Africana Studies.

Applicants must be graduating seniors from the University Honors Program who can articulate in a short essay their personal and intellectual desires to travel. Additionally, a desire to share their travel experiences upon return is greatly encouraged.

    The Paul F. Boller Prize Fund was established to honor one or more graduating students who submit "the best essays written by a student in the field of history." The minimum prize amount awarded is $150, with the history department responsible for all details, including the method of selection.

    The Peter Brooks Butler Memorial Scholarship seeks to award one full time enrolled sophomore or junior English major who demonstrates talent in creative writing and/or Renaissance literature with a "scholarship to attend the UMass/Oxford Seminar." This scholarship is awarded every two years, and in the absence of a qualified student, the money is awarded to an entering senior as a book prize.

  • Ruth Butler Endowed Fund

    The Ruth Butler Endowed Fund provides scholarships for international travel to undergraduate art students entering their junior or senior year. Among the selection criteria is a project plan that includes "where the student plans to work or names of individuals with whom s/he intends to work," a budget, and language proficiency. A written report of the students work must be submitted upon their return.

    U-ACCESS supports students who are coping with issues such as: homelessness, emancipation from foster care, chronic or persistent poverty, domestic violence and financial hardship. It offers information and resources referral, case management, and a food pantry program.

    By offering special interdisciplinary academic opportunities outside the major, the University Honors Program serves students who thrive on intellectual challenge. The program offers enriched courses that may probe more deeply into theory or venture further into application. They may bring guest experts to the classroom or exploit special resources in the Boston area. It fosters community among its students outside the classroom as well. Honors students have a common study area, and the program sponsors special events every semester. Academic advising is a high priority, and the program seeks to connect its students to opportunities for scholarships, internships, and service activities.

  • Urban Scholars Program

    Founded at UMass Boston in 1983 as a pilot precollegiate program for academically talented public high school students from predominantly minority and low-income backgrounds, Urban Scholars has since prepared nearly 1,500 Boston Public Schools middle and high school students for success in college. Some 98 percent of Urban Scholars graduates enroll in college, and 86 percent graduate – much higher rates than those of their Boston Public Schools and national peers.

  • Veterans History Project

    The Veterans History Project Student Edition provides students, teachers, mentors and afterschool programs with shared, structured opportunities to conduct background research, prepare interview questions, conduct interviews, and produce creative and interactive oral history projects and documentaries.

    Students are encouraged to share related experiences with veterans that have been inspired by war films and documentaries, interviews with veterans, and literature and military history. The project's goal is to have students identify and interview a war veteran and submit a video which they create to the Library of Congress. There it will exist as a permanent national history resource. Videos created will also  be uploaded to the Student Edition site.

    The Veterans Upward Bound Program at the University of Massachusetts Boston provides a unique opportunity for men and women veterans of all ages to gain access to information about college and career awareness, to acquire the academic skills required for entry into higher education, and/or to acquire the equivalent of a high school diploma.
