The students' merits may be assessed by "test scores, high school GPA, recommendations, and community service," in addition to financial need. To remain an Atkins scholar, a student must maintain honors-level work with a GPA of 3.2 or higher.

The Osher Reentry Scholarship assists students between the ages of twenty five and fifty years who are seeking their first bachelor's degree and who have taken a leave of absence in their studies of at least five years. The scholarship assists with tuition fees for students who have demonstrated financial need.

The Smith Scholarship provides special recognition to certain especially outstanding students participating in the University Scholars Program at undergraduate campuses of the university (based in part on SAT or equivalent test scores) and to selected resident students at the Worcester graduate campus. Student candidates are recommended by the Admissions Office and provosts of the various campuses, with final selection made by the vice president for academic affairs and CEO of the foundation, which provides a report of recipients to Mr. Smith during his lifetime.
