How to enrich the college experience through student and faculty community engagement has long been a motivating challenge for Professor John Saltmarsh of the Graduate College of Education. Will Oudam Preap '10 and Francisca Ochieng '10 had never heard of the small Irish fishing village of Carna when they recently met Deirdre Dow-Chase at the University Dining Club. There Dow-Chase, who has established a scholarship endowment for immigrant students, told them about her family’s roots in County Galway.
Ochieng and Preap may have known little about Carna, but they could fully understand the meaning of “homeland.” The two scholarship recipients, Preap from Cambodia and Ochieng from Kenya, are precisely the types of students Dow-Chase is determined to support. |more|
