Annuity Shares Gratitude for Rewarding Profession
Lola Tassinari McGrail '35 enjoys reminiscing about her years as a student at the Teachers College of the City of Boston, years that prepared her for the career that she successfully followed.
Today, with the staggering cost of an education, it is almost unbelievable that four years of college, followed in some cases by a fifth-year master's, was offered at no charge to the students at Teachers College. "There was no tuition. Even the books were free!" she says.
Beyond the financial advantage of attending Teachers College was the outstanding education that trained and prepared students for a career in the teaching profession. Lola followed her graduation with many years as a teacher of Spanish and French in the Boston Public Schools. They were happy years, and she is still in touch with several of her former students.
In appreciation and gratitude for those years at Teachers College of the City of Boston, she decided to establish a charitable gift annuity at the University of Massachusetts Boston in 2004. The gift annuity will fund a scholarship for a student at the university who is pursuing a career in education and offers a dual advantage to Lola. It provides funding for a scholarship and provides her with income. Lola found the gift so satisfying that she established a second charitable gift annuity in 2006 to benefit the same scholarship.
Lola says, "I think of it as a small payback, a 'thank you,' for the many happy professional years I have enjoyed."
