Opportunities for Investment
"The university's engagement takes many forms, especially helping to address some of the outstanding challenges to communities, local, national, and global."
J. Keith Motley, Ph.D., Chancellor
The University of Massachusetts Boston has the capacity to influence our urban context as no other institution does. We believe that the following initiatives represent significant opportunities for corporate and foundation partnership in advancing the "engagement" about which our Chancellor speaks.
Scholarships | Urban Scholars | GoKids Boston | CCER | Teach Next Year | Haynes Professorship | Confucius Institute
Scholarships
Even though UMass Boston's tuition is significantly lower than tuition at private institutions, financial aid can determine whether our students pursue college or travel an alternative path. Corporations recognize the value of the university's diverse and globally astute students and welcome the potential employees who reach them through the UMass Boston "pipeline." One example is our State Street Scholars Program, which offers College of Management students financial aid and corporate internships, with the goal of ultimately hiring students for leadership positions.Scholarships may be supported either through current use gifts or endowment. A Scholarship Endowment can be established through a minimum gift of $25,000. To learn more about how your company or foundation can partner through the provision of scholarship support, contact Darrell C. Byers at 617.287.5323.
Urban Scholars
This remarkably successful pre-college program has enriched over 1,500 lives in its 25-year history. Eighty-five percent of Urban Scholars graduates go on to college, compared to the 53 percent of Boston public school students who do so. The program has ambitious plans as it looks toward its next quarter century and will celebrate its accomplishments at a public event in spring 2009. Created with initial support from Children’s Hospital Boston, GoKids Boston is one of the region’s and nation’s most innovative research centers. GoKids Boston's mission centers around the development of practical tools to promote health and fitness in children and address children’s health issues such as obesity, asthma, and diabetes. This state-of-the-art facility is a revolution in nursing and health science education at UMass Boston. Outfitted with technologically advanced medical and simulation equipment, the center mimics a variety of patient care settings, from intensive care to cardiac rehabilitation, and allows students to work through real life clinical scenarios. In this non-threatening environment students can practice clinical reasoning and technical skills, gaining competence and confidence and thereby promoting the quality and safety of the care they will provide to “live” patients in their clinical agencies. This longstanding effort, a three-way partnership between UMass Boston’s Graduate College of Education, the university’s successful pre-collegiate programs, and the Dorchester Education Complex (DEC), simultaneously improves teaching and learning at DEC and gives teacher-preparation at UMass Boston a stronger urban focus. The year-long program features UMass Boston summer courses followed by integrated graduate study and teaching at DEC. It grew from lead gifts from the Trefler Foundation and has received support from Nellie Mae Education and Noyce Foundations, although additional funding is still needed for the program to achieve its full promise. To learn more, contact Ellen Fleming, director of corporate and foundation relations at 617.287.5327.Reverend Michael E. Haynes Distinguished Professorship in Urban Studies
Located at the McCormack Graduate School of Policy Studies, this professorship will promote urban education, healthcare, youth development, and other areas of public policy that focus on strengthening urban communities and urban schools. The holder of the professorship will also engage McCormack Graduate School students in applied research and service to underserved Boston youth, and will take the lead in coordinating interdisciplinary programs and projects within UMass Boston to address the education, health, sociological, economic, and environmental needs of these young people and their families. To learn more, contact Gina Cappello, associate vice chancellor, at 617.287.5335.Confucius Institute
Built on longstanding relationships UMass Boston has cultivated with China, the Confucius Institute was established in 2006 in collaboration with Renmin University of China and The High School Affiliated to Renmin University of China, with the sponsorship and authorization of Hanban, the Office of Chinese Language Council International, under the Ministry of Education, China. It promotes understanding of Chinese language and culture through courses, conferences, travel, and cultural events, providing opportunities for cultural exchange and collaboration between the US and China. Through the Institute, UMass Boston has developed the most productive U.S.-China alliances of any academic institution in the Northeast. A major public initiative is the Institute's “Chinese Bridge” a U.S. high school student speech contest, held annually. This national day-long event gathers 18 high school students, who have mastered Mandarin, to make a short presentation on the importance of American’s cultural awareness about Asia, and knowledge of the Chinese language.
