In an effort to prevent the outbreak or spread of the novel H1N1 flu virus at UMass Boston, university officials from across the campus have been meeting to plan and implement a flu preparedness efforts aimed at “creating a healthy campus.”

Public health officials across the country have predicted a particularly severe flu season and encourage individuals and organizations to take special precautions because of the expected spread of the so-called swine flu. As part of the UMass Boston effort, the university’s Health Services has launched a public awareness campaign, complete with posters, tabletops, and fliers with flu prevention tips. Health Services’ website (www.umb.edu/flu) includes a comprehensive list of suggestions, updates, and other information, as well as links to current recommendations provided by the Boston Public Health Commission, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and the Centers for Disease Control.

“Our goal is to educate the campus community on prevention strategies and treatment options should they get flu symptoms ” said the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs /Executive Director of Health Services Kathleen Golden McAndrew. “We’re here to assist and act as a resource for current information.”

The most important things to remember, according to Golden McAndrew, are: Wash your hands frequently and cover your cough with a tissue, preferably coughing into the sleeve of your elbow; get a seasonal flu vaccine; and stay home when you are sick. The university has installed hand-sanitizing stations in key locations across the campus and provided anti-bacterial wipes for the sanitizing of shared computers and telephones.

University Health Services will provide seasonal flu clinics on September 29, 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.; September 30, 11a.m. – 4 p.m.; and October 1, 2 – 7 p.m. For locations and more information, visit umb.edu/flu.
