In the following:
- DHCP stands for dynamic host configuration protocol.
- NIC stands for network interface card
This example was created using Windows XP. Other Windows versions may differ slightly. However, they are sufficiently similar for the example to be useful.
Step #1 – Open NIC Adapter via Start Menu -> Network Connections -> Local Area Connection (or equivalent.) This is the same initial step used to set a static IP number.

Step #4 – Select DNS tab and Uncheck the “Register this connection’s address in DNS”.
