Faculty / Staff Webmail Login

You will have a choice of Public or Private session.
- The Private session will allow your session to stay alive for 60 minutes before timing out.
- The Public session times out in 10 minutes. Caution: if you are composing a message when the session expires and you attempt to send the message, you will lose the message! Be sure to save your draft frequently by cklicking the disk icon. Just having a window open or composing a message is not interacting with the server — you have to be refreshing the inbox, sending email changing folders, etc. to reset the 10 minute timer.
If you are using Internet Explorer you'll have a choice of Premium or Basic client (non IE browsers only get Basic). The Premium client has all the OWA features included. Basic has less OWA features but is faster so would be a good choice for Internet Explorer users with a slow internet connection.
Logging in
Once you reach the login screen, enter your email username and password (your username is the part of your email address before the @ sign) to log in .
If you are unable to log in, contact the IT Service Desk by phone (617-287-5220) or email (ITservicedesk@umb.edu) or by visiting the 3rd floor of the Healey Library during business hours (M-F 8-6 excluding holidays during the semester).
Rules in OWA
Server-side rules run on the server when you email arrives and execute no matter what client you are running. Client-side rules run only in your email client, so they only act on email while you are using that client. The ability to see and edit server rules has been added to OWA 2003. If a server rule is grayed out in your list of Rules in OWA then it is still working but you just cannot edit it with OWA (Example: Any rule which includes an "exception" will be grayed out in OWA Rules listing).
Common Problems
With Internet Explorer you should add the UMB web server to your "Trusted Sites." In all browsers, you may need to:
- Enable cookies
- Enable JavaScript
- Enable ActiveX
Remote Access for Outlook
Applying for an Email Account
To apply for a UMass Boston faculty, staff, or deparmental email account, you must submit an MS Exchange EMail form (PDF). Once you have completed it, return it to the IT Service Desk in the Healey Library on the 3rd floor (090-03-007).
Create an email distribution list
You can create an email distribution list (PDF) which allows you to maintain a list of UMB addresses that can all be sent to using a single email address. Sending an email to the distribution list causes it to be sent to everyone you have added to that list.
Lyris List Manager
If you need more functionality than a distribution list, such as the ability to include a non-UMB email address, you can submit a Lyris list manager request form (DOC). This is a little more complicated to maintain, but it is capable of high volume communications and has many features not available with a distribution list.
Email for Life Policy
- Faculty members who retire may keep their UMB email accounts for life.
- Staff members who retire and wish to continue using the university email system must formally request that their email accounts be kept active. Please send an email to ITservicedesk@umb.edu requesting that you wish to continue using the university email system.
- Email accounts of faculty or staff who resign from the University or are terminated will be deleted on the last day of employment.
