Workshop Descriptions

Streaming Video / Breeze / Horizon Wimba (Synchronous Conferencing) Introductory Workshop

This workshop acquaints UMB online faculty members with the uses of streaming video, Breeze and and synchronous conferencing as ways to enhance a UMB Corporate, Continuing and Distance Education (CCDE) on-line course. All online instructors teaching within the UMB CCDE online program for the first time are required to attend a session of the Streaming Video / Breeze / Synchronous Conferencing Introductory Workshop.

During the streaming video overview, we will demonstrate examples of effective streaming videos, discuss how to engage students through video, and offer tips and techniques for the best use of streaming video for online instruction. During this workshop, we will also review university policies associated with compliance with digital copyright laws and we will go over the process of obtaining written copyright releases and digital licensing

During the overview of narrated PowerPoints and Breeze, we will show you some examples of streaming video PowerPoint Presentations with added narration, and demonstrate how to create narrated PowerPoint’s using Breeze, a server-based hosting system that allows faculty account-holders to convert and upload Powerpoint files to the web, making them available for easy student access.

In the Synchronous Conferencing overview, we will examine UMB online faculty members' historical use of Centra Symposium, an online environment that enables faculty to host synchronous learning events. Centra Symposium, a licensed product currently in use by UMB online faculty, represents one of a class of synchronous collaboration tools that include audio and video presentation functions, live interactive discussion and text feedback functions, content presentations that make use of PowerPoint slides, whiteboard and markup capabilities, application sharing and web touring capabilities.

Enrollment in a Streaming Video / Breeze / Synchronous Conferencing Introductory Workshop is limited to 30, so please reserve a seat if you plan to attend. Please RSVP to john.jessoe@umb.edu.

Breeze Presenter Basic Training Workshop

Horizon Wimba Live Classroom (Synchronous Conferencing) Basic Training
(Required for faculty using synchronous conferencing for the first timne in a UMB CCDE online course.)

Introductory training for online faculty who intend to add Synchronous Conferencing to an online course. Learn how Synchronous Conferencing supports course meetings and virtual office hours, provides an audio chat function, and presentation tools including a PowerPoint™ importation feature, whiteboard, application sharing and web touring (a ‘push’ technology for providing students with guided tours on the web).
Topics will include:
• the procedures for requesting Synchronous Conferencing for your course
• the support process by which students are notified of how to access the Synchronous Conferencing environment
• the support typically required by students configuring hardware and software for participation
• the location, content, and focus of support materials on web
• communication tools and presentation tools used during sessions

Participation involves hands-on activities at computer workstations, discussions, and presentations of key concepts; online faculty will experience synchronous conferencing as participants in a live session, from the vantage point of students attending a session. Simultaneously, participants will see the instructor’s “Presenter” facilitation tools (projected on large screen), observing as the trainer facilitates communication and provides presentations within the virtual environment.
