Adaptive Technologies
The Adaptive Computing Laboratory offers professional services and the hardware and software to make computing technology available to persons with disabilities.
We serve people with these kinds of disabilities:
- Orthopedic disabilities
- Visual disabilities (blindness or low vision)
- Deafness or hearing impairments
- Acquired brain injuries
- Learning disabilities
- Communication disorders
Our hardware and software help with:
- Inputting information (using a standard keyboard or mouse);
- Information output (seeing the screen or reading a computer printout);
- The environment (obstacles in the physical layout of the room or computer terminal set-up);
- Training (training in the use of hardware, software, and adaptations);
- Technical documentation (understanding the jargon and complicated explanations found in many computer/software manuals
- Support (in the purchase and set-up of hardware andthe use of software to increase productivity).
For UMass/Boston students, faculty, and staff, we:
- Evaluate needs for hardware and software, adaptations, training, and continuing support
- Provide training in the use of hardware and software for individuals.
- Staff and maintain a facility with all necessary hardware and software
- Provide continuing support and retraining
- Accommodate student exam taking
We are a program of Division of IT and the Lillian Semper Ross Center for Disability Services at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
