The awards are named for Esther Kingston-Mann, former director of UMass Boston's Center for Innovative Teaching (CIT) and founding director of The New England Center for Inclusive Teaching. Publications include: A Diversity Research Initiative: How Students Become Researchers, Change Agents, and Members of a Research Community (Boston, 1999), Achieving Against the Odds: How Academics Become Teachers of Diverse Students, co-edited with Tim Sieber (2003), and Teaching, Learning, Diversity: Just Don't Call It Epistemology! The Discourse of Sociological Practice (2004).
