When should a student contact the Office of the Dean of Students?
Students should contact the our office any time a concern arises and they do not know where to go for assistance.
- In cases where an emergency may force you to miss classes or require certain accommodations;
- If you feel that someone is interfering with your ability to get an education;
- If you are seeking advocacy or guidance about a student life issue;
- If you are concerned about the health or safety of another member of the UMass Boston community;
- If you feel overwhelmed and are thinking of withdrawing from the university;
- If you need help and don’t know where to go, contact the Office of the Dean of Students.
How do I get an appointment to see the Dean of Students?
We are located on the 4th floor of the Campus Center and our office hours are from 9:00 AM until 5:00 PM. Students, families, faculty and staff are welcome to call (617-287-5899, email dean.students@umb.edu, or walk in as needed.
Which office normally handles student conduct matters?
Matters concerning alleged violations of the Student Code of Conduct are handled by the Office of Student Conduct. Allegations of Academic Integrity; violations are handled through the specific academic department.
Who do I contact if I have a concerns about a faculty member or an academic decision?
Any concerns about course content, grading, class requirements, or your professor's teaching methods should be directed to your academic dean. If a student feels they need advocacy in these matters, they are encouraged to contact the Office of the Dean of Students.
How do I withdraw if I have a medical or health problem
In the event of a serious medical/mental health condition or family emergency, a student may request a withdrawal from classes. All decisions about medical and mental health withdrawals are determined by the Office of the Dean of Students.
Who can I talk to if I have questions about the Student Conduct Process?
You can call the Office of the Dean of Students. Many times your questions can be answered through a phone conversations or through an email.
How do I get official forms completed on my behalf from Office of Dean of Studets?
Students who are transferring, applying to professional schools, sitting for bar exams, or needing information communicated to others about their performance may need official forms completed on their behalf. The Office of the Dean of Students may only complete the disciplinary record section of Dean Certification forms or Admission Application forms for students. Click here to download the application.
