Integrating Yourself Into the Community

When you move to a new neighborhood, it is important to become engaged with the community. No matter where you live, it is both your right and responsibility to take part in governing your community. The laws and regulations adopted by your local municipality, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the U.S. Government directly impact you and your daily life. Students are encouraged to participate in all local, state, and federal elections.

Voter Registration

It is your civic responsibility to register to vote. To register to vote in Massachusetts, you must be:

  • a U.S. citizen
  • a Massachusetts resident
  • at least 18 years of age by the next election

If you meet these requirements, you are eligible to register to vote in Massachusetts. Registration forms and additional information are available here.

Municipal Government

Each city or town in Massachusetts has its own form of municipal government. Towns have a “town hall meeting” structure whereas cities utilize “city councils.”  For information about your municipal government, check the website. A list of the websites for all cities and towns in Massachusetts is available here.
