There’s a lot to think about when choosing your first apartment. Make a checklist of things that are important to you in an apartment (proximity to campus, proximity to public transportation, etc.). You should also inspect the premises to ensure it complies with health and safety standards. Use the Boston Housing Code checklist to make sure the property you are renting is up to code. If the unit fails to meet any of these conditions, you have a legal right to demand that the landlord repair or improve the premises.
