Visual Identity Guide for UMass Boston

Any use of the UMass Boston logo external to the campus must meet the university policy on trademark use (PDF 59KB). This visual identity guide applies to use of the UMass Boston logo by internal entities of the campus.

Various images and words associated with the University of Massachusetts are formally trademarked. To protect the University's image, it is important that those using these graphics and references do so in the appropriate manner.

Using the informal and formal logos for your publishing purposes

Please consult the University of Massachusetts Board of Trustees polices, in particular the policy on trademark use (PDF 59KB).

(Prepared by the Office of University Communications, University of Massachusetts Boston)

In August 1998, the Board of Trustees of the University of Massachusetts voted to adopt a system-wide logo in order to achieve a consistent visual identity for the five-campus system. Without altering the registered trademark portion of the logo, each campus was given the opportunity to modify the logo for its individual purposes. Modifications included school colors and informal versus formal usage of the logo.

Under the direction of the Chancellor and the Executive Staff, UMass Boston devised an informal and formal logo for the campus. There are a few guidelines that must be followed when using the logo, as well as how to refer to our campus in written or oral contexts. Listed below you will find the acceptable logos and the guidelines for you to follow in identifying the University of Massachusetts Boston.

In referring to our campus, two options are available:

University of Massachusetts Boston or UMass Boston.

With the arrival of the College of Public and Community Service to our campus and the subsequent closing of the downtown campus, the university is no longer referred to as the "Harbor Campus." Also, there is no preposition, punctuation or other grammatical symbol used when referencing the campus.

It is important that all publications including newsletters, fact sheets and brochures should include the university's name, address, telephone number, fax number and e-mail address (if possible). These items should be featured in a prominent place either on the front cover or back cover of the publication.

The University logo consists of a hand-drawn script capital "U"superimposed on a block letter capital "M" above the words "UMASS BOSTON"in all caps.

The logo can vary in size but should not be reduced to less than 1/2 inch in width. Space around the logo should not be less than 1/2 the width of the logo size you are using.

The trademark symbol signifies that the logo is owned by the University and is registered to protect against its unauthorized use, and therefore, the logo should not be altered nor the trademark symbol removed.

The main supporting fonts to be used in publications are Sabon (roman, italic, bold, bold italic) and Frutiger (italic, bold, etc.)

The official color of UMass Boston is reflex blue. While using other colors with this color is acceptable, reflex blue should be the dominant color used particularly when publishing a formal document for the university.

You can obtain the logo on disk by contacting the Office of University Communications, 287-5380. The Office also has the logo as camera ready artwork, which is required to reproduce the logo on certain products.

Guidelines for use on the Web

If you choose to download the logo and upload it to your own server, please do not edit it other than changing its size to fit your needs. Do not display it at a size renders the trademark symbol indiscernible.

Where the logo is used, it should link to the university home page (http://www.umb.edu/) and contain an appropriate alt attribute such as "UMass Boston Home" or "UMass Boston logo" if a title attribute will be used to indicate the target of the link.
