Polly Logan has been a key figure for many elected officials in the Republican Party. Among the nearly 400 attendees were such luminaries as Congressman Amo Houghton of New York, former Massachusetts Lt. Governor Evelyn Murphy, and former Massachusetts State Senator Lucile Hicks. Not surprisingly, our state"s two highest ranking Republicans, Governor Paul Cellucci and Lt. Governor Jane Swift joined the crowd to sing the praises of a mentor and activist who transcends Republican stereotypes. In her remarks, Lt. Governor Swift described Logan as a "friend and supporter" who is quick to send an encouraging word when needed. Governor Cellucci came to the podium with not just praise but a proclamation making September 11, 2000, "Polly Logan Day" in Massachusetts. A longtime supporter of the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy and instrumental in bringing the Graduate Program for Women in Politics and Government to UMass Boston, Chancellor Sherry Penney spoke of the center"s goals to "prepare women for leadership" and to "promote civic activism and involvement." The establishment of the Polly Logan Fund, Penney remarked, is in honor to "an individual who has spent her lifetime committed to civic involvement." With the establishment of the Polly Logan Fund, the Center will be able to enhance its scholarship and mentoring program for graduate students, attract distinguished officials and scholars to give public lectures, and conduct innovative and timely research on public policy issues affecting women. Center Director Elizabeth Sherman is thrilled by the possibilities the Logan Fund will bring to the Center and the University. She estimates that nearly $250,000 in contributions have been received to launch the fund. |
