news and events

University Communications

Do you read daily newspapers, weekly magazines, and books? Do you have a good knowledge of a wide range of subjects? Do you consider yourself thoughtful and curious? Do you project a sense of authority and credibility? Are you a great conversationalist and a thoughtful listener?

You don’t have to be a radio professional to be considered for the job, but experience behind the microphone is a definite plus.

WUMB Radio and the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities are searching for a new host for the public/cultural affairs radio show, Commonwealth Journal. Commonwealth Journal is a weekly half-hour program featuring two 14-minute interviews with scholars, writers, cultural workers, or public officials examining current topics and issues of particular interest to Massachusetts’ radio listeners. Segments may be about summer theater programs in the Berkshires, the history of the Customs House in Boston, new Massachusetts welfare regulations, MCAS testing, or a recent Supreme Court Ruling.

Commonwealth Journal informs Massachusetts residents about what is happening in, around, and to their state; or addresses national and international issues from a Massachusetts perspective. The show is aired weekly on twenty radio stations around Massachusetts and is eager to continue its growth.

Duties include: assisting with topic selection and participating actively in weekly and quarterly program planning and review meetings; reading research material and/or books; developing questions for guests and assisting in writing promotional copy; interviewing program guests for the pre-taped weekly program at a mutually agreed-upon time; and doing voice work for weekly promos. Duties do not include guest booking and research, correspondence with guests and/or stations, other administrative duties, or final program production. The time commitment usually varies between six and twelve hours per week. The weekly stipend is $100-$200, depending on experience.

For more information, or to arrange an interview, contact Patricia Monteith, General Manager, WUMB Radio, 287-6900.
