The university is replacing the tent with a new gazebo pavilion, a permanent shelter for the community to enjoy all year round. Spanning the same dimensions as the 30’ by 80’ tented area, the pavilion will provide an area to gather, hold events, or just to relax by the harbor. The new structure will be constructed of environmentally friendly materials such as recycled plastic lumber, concrete, and wood, and will offer tables, seating, and a barbecue unit for events and recreation. Breaking ground shortly, the builders will complete the new pavilion by the end of May, just in time for the enjoyment of the new summer sun.

“The pavilion will extend the site for use beyond the usual May-to-September season,” explains Chris Sweeney, director of marine operations and assistant director of facilities support services, who has overseen the project. “We need a permanent outside area where people can gather on the water’s edge.”

The area is adjacent to the busy Fox Point facility, which is located on the campus’s harbor walk at Savin Hill Cove. A very popular area, it is the site for M/V Hurricane historical tours of Harbor Island, a research dock and vessel, and local sailing instruction.

The site is a favorite spot for many, including UMass Boston staff and students, K -12 classes, and community groups, and has hosted organizations ranging from the Harbor School, Boston College High School varsity sailing team, and the Massachusetts Audubon Society. Sweeney anticipates the area’s continued popularity. With an extended season for enjoying the views, there is no limit to the activities which can be held at the new pavilion.
