Web Based Learning Speaker Series: Creating a Great On-line Syllabus

Get Up and Talk! Making Presentations with Confidence
9 a.m. - 4 p.m., UMB's Institute for Community Inclusion, 20 Park Plaza, Boston. Speaking in public is frightening for most people. Yet the ability to make effective public presentations is critical for professionals and educators alike. Participants in this interactive one-day seminar can begin to overcome fears and concerns while enhancing their public speaking skills. Topics include effective planning, knowing one's audience, presenting with confidence, and developing one's own style. Registration is required three weeks in advance ($75). Art/Talks: "A Work in Progress" with painter Wilfredo Chiesa
11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., McCormack, 1st floor, Harbor Gallery. During his leave from UMB last semester, Chiesa had shows of in Boston, New York, and his native Puerto Rico. While in San Juan, he was invited to create a mural for the town of Old San Juan. The abstract piece, reflective of the local architecture, will be painted as a fresco – meaning the paint will be applied to wet plaster - on 110 panels, each 4 ft. x 6 ft. The finished work will be 75ft. long and 50 ft. high. This most recent work extends Wilredo's impressive list of public art commissions which are found in Madrid, Venice, Columbia, New York and Boston. Chiesa has taught at UMB since 1979. Hruby sculptureAn Exhibition to Honor Veterans: "Stack Arms"; work by Ken Hruby

TICS (Talks in Cognitive Science)
Which subject of scientific investigation could be more fascinating and challenging than the human brain? Attend a TICS meeting at UMB. TICS meetings take place approximately bi-weekly on Wednesdays from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. in McCormack Hall, room 409. The duration of presentations is between 45 and 60 minutes, followed by a discussion. Afterwards there is time for informal exchange of ideas while refreshments are served.
