The State of Latino Massachusetts: From Analysis to Strategy
What: Top researchers and community leaders will meet to review the latest
research and updates on the status of Latinos in Massachusetts at a biennial
public policy conference. The meeting will follow up on recommendations
made in the 2000 Latino conference held in Worcester and review topics
such as election reform, redistricting, state budget, future of Latino
community-based organizations, and human rights in the wake of September
11. Workshops will be held throughout the day and a televised Town Hall
meeting is planned for the afternoon focusing on bilingual education and
related education topics.
Who: The Mauricio Gastón Institute for Latino Community Development
and Public Policy was established at UMass Boston through the initiative
of Latino community activists and academics in response to a need for
improved understanding of Latino experiences and living conditions in
Massachusetts. The task of the institute is to inform policy makers about
issues vital to the Commonwealth's growing Latino community and to provide
this community with information and analysis necessary for effective participation
in public policy development.
