WUMB's Commonwealth Journal Wins Top
Asssociated Press Broadcasters Award
Public Affairs Show Wins First Place for Second Year in a Row
(Boston, MA) Commonwealth Journal, a weekly public affairs program produced
by WUMB Radio and the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities, has
won first place for public service programming from the Associated Press
of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. This is the second year in a row the
program has received this award. Broadcasters evaluated the show from
a submission CD featuring host Barbara Neely and guests speaking on show
topics "Changing Lives Through Literature" and "Shakespeare
Behind Bars." The official award ceremony will be held on April 20
at the Newton Marriott in conjunction with the Radio and Television News
Directors Annual Conference.
Commonwealth Journal features segments with scholars, writers, cultural
workers, and public officials examining current issues of particular interest
to Massachusetts listeners. Programs range from topics such as the history
of the Customs House in Boston, new welfare regulations, and MCAs testing.
The program is produced with support from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
Listeners can tune in for provocative and insightful interviews every
Sunday at 7:00 p.m. on 91.9 FM in Boston, as well as on 23 public radio
stations across Massachusetts.
WUMB-FM is a National Public Radio affiliate and provides folk music,
public affairs, and news programming. Licensed by the University of Massachusetts,
WUMB-FM broadcasts from studios located at UMass Boston, which serves
as the central hub for a network of five public radio stations in Boston,
Worcester, Newburyport, Falmouth, and Orleans. The station's 24-hour a
day broadcast schedule reaches nearly two million people in Massachusetts
and eastern New England. The station also broadcasts live at www.wumb.org.
In Boston, Worcester, Newburyport, and Cape Cod, WUMB is heard on 91.9FM.
The station is also heard on 1170AM in Orleans on Lower Cape.
