Senator John Kerry To Deliver Keynote Address at Joiner Center's 20th
Anniversary
(Boston, MA) On October 25, the University of Massachusetts Boston will
mark twenty years since the school's William Joiner Center for the Study
of War and Social Consequences first opened its doors. That day UMass
Boston Chancellor Jo Ann M. Gora and Senator John Kerry will host a commemorative
gala, which will be held at the nearby John F. Kennedy Presidential Library
at 6:00 p.m.
Under the guidance of its director, Kevin Bowen, the Joiner Center provides
educational and other services to war veterans; conducts research and
makes policy recommendations on issues of concern to veterans; and encourages
teaching and scholarship on war and its societal impact. Named for William
Joiner, an African American veteran of the war in Vietnam and the university's
first Director of Veterans' Affairs before his death in 1981, the Center
was founded at the urging of veterans within the UMass Boston student
body. Although the Center has devoted much of its effort and resources
to examination of the Vietnam War, it has also engaged in studies of World
War II, the Korean Conflict, and, more recently, the Gulf War.
The honorary chairmen for the anniversary celebration are Marshall Carter,
former CEO of State Street and currently a fellow at the JFK School of
Government, and Wainwright Bank president Robert Glassman. Writer and
scholar Jonathan Schell will serve as master of ceremonies. Also in attendance
will be Senator Jack Hart, Congressman Steven Lynch, poets Bruce Weigl
and Fred Marchant, Lloyd Schwartz of the UMass Boston faculty, and members
of the Joiner Center family.
In addition to remarks by Chancellor Gora, the program will consist of
a welcome reception, a photo display highlighting twenty years of Joiner
Center activities, a presentation of honorary awards, a short film, and
musical performances by Irish flutist Jimmy Noonan and Vietnamese musician
Thanh Nguyen. Senator Kerry will deliver the keynote address.
