- Designer Joseph Abboud to Lecture At
UMass Boston
New York Designer and 1972 UMass Boston graduate Joseph Abboud plans
a return to the university as a special guest lecturer for the first
of three planned visits on Wednesday, February 13th at the invitation
of the university's College of Management (CM). Subsequent visits will
take place on Thursday March 7 and Wednesday April 10.

return to the university on Wednesday, February 13th as special guest
lecturer. Abboud launched his signature menswear collection in 1987.

- Annual Community Breakfast at UMass
Boston Honors Dudley Square Neighborhood Planner Joyce Stanley
Each year the Robert H. Quinn award is given to an individual who has
displayed exemplary community leadership. At the sixteenth annual breakfast
honoring the winner, to be held on Wednesday, March 20, UMass Boston
will recognize Joyce Stanley for her work in city planning and community
development for Roxbury and the City of Boston. Community leaders, elected
officials, local businesspeople, and members of the UMass Boston faculty
and staff will gather to honor her at UMass Boston's University Club,
10th Floor, Healey Library from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m.
- UMass Boston Teacher "Pipeline"
Plan to Be Announced At Meeting Today with Boston, Cambridge, &
Somerville Superintendents
Public schools in Massachusetts and nationally are confronting the need
to recruit teachers of the highest caliber to meet the growing demand
for a new teaching workforce. Preparing good teachers is critical, and
so is retaining them, since 44% of teachers currently hired each year
in urban public schools leave the profession within three years. Linkages
with higher education institutions to develop effective approaches to
teacher preparation and teacher retention are central to meeting this
need.

- UMB Radio Announces Line-up for 5th Annual
Boston Folk Festival
The nation's only full-time folk music radio station, WUMB-FM is pleased
to announce the major line-up for the 5th Annual Boston Folk Festival.
This spectacular event features the best in traditional acoustic folk
as well as cutting edge contemporary folk artists, local, national and
international singer-songwriters, bluegrass, blues, zydeco, world music
and more. The festival, which draws thousands each year, will take place
Saturday, September 21st and Sunday, September 22nd 2002 at the UMass
Boston Campus.
- UMass Boston Seniors Receive Fulbright
Grants
For Outstanding Academic Scholarship
Two UMass Boston seniors Michael Plante and Ben Day have received Fulbright
grants in recognition of their outstanding academic scholarship. Plante
is one of ten undergraduate students across the country traveling to
Japan and Day is on one of twenty undergraduates to travel to the United
Kingdom. Both students are members of the university's honor program
and well-known for their academic commitment and achievements.
- UMass Boston Authors Participate in
Celebrate Dorchester Author Series
UMass Boston authors will be featured in the Celebrate
Dorchester author series which features work by writers who
live in, work, or write about Dorchester. The readings will be held
throughout May in various locations in Dorchester and is sponsored by
the Dorchester Center for Adult Education and five Dorchester branch
libraries. All events are free.
- WUMB's Commonwealth Journal Wins Top
Associated Press Broadcasters Award; Public Affairs Show Wins First
Place for Second Year in a Row
Commonwealth Journal, a weekly public affairs program produced by WUMB
Radio and the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities, has won first
place for public service programming from the Associated Press of Massachusetts
and Rhode Island. This is the second year in a row the program has received
this award. Broadcasters evaluated the show from a submission CD featuring
host Barbara Neely and guests speaking on show topics "Changing
Lives Through Literature" and "Shakespeare Behind Bars."
The official award ceremony will be held on April 20 at Emerson College.
- Republican Candidate for Lt. Governor
Patrick Guerriero To Speak at UMass Boston
Republican Patrick Guerriero will discuss the upcoming gubernatorial
election and his bid for Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts at an
open forum for students, faculty, and the community on Thursday, April
11. The Republican Club of UMass Boston is sponsoring the visit with
Guerriero, who was a former two-term mayor in Melrose.

- UMass Boston Announces
2002 Commencement
On Saturday, June 1, 2002, over 2,525 baccalaureate, master's, and
doctoral degrees will be conferred at UMass Boston's 34th commencement
held at the Bayside Exposition Center. The general procession begins
at 10:30 a.m. and the main ceremony will begin at 11:00 a.m.

Over 2,500 baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees will be conferred
at UMass Boston's 34th commencement on Saturday, June 1. The commencement
address will be delivered by honorary degree recipient Tim Russert,
national political analyst and journalist. Russert is the managing editor
and moderator of "Meet the Press," the most watched Sunday
morning interview show in America. He is also chief political analyst
for NBC's "Nightly News with Tom Brokaw" and "The Today
Show," in addition to serving as vice president of NBC News and
Washington Bureau Chief.

- Gubernatorial Forum Series on Elder
Issues Will Be Held at UMass Boston in June
The Learning in Retirement Program at the University of Massachusetts
Boston, called LETS (Life Enrichment Transition Studies), and UMass
Boston's Gerontology Alumni Association will continue a series of forums
featuring the Commonwealth's gubernatorial candidates in June. The first
forum in May by Robert Reich was well attended. The next three forums
will be held at UMass Boston Campus.
- John F. Kennedy Award Winner
Ben Day To Address UMass Boston Class of 2002
Ben Day, a 2002 graduate known for his unprecedented scholarship and
social activism, has been named the winner of the John F. Kennedy Award,
which recognizes excellence in scholarship and community service. He
will speak at the University of Massachusetts Boston's 34th commencement
on behalf of the Class of 2002.

Rusty Simonds To Receive the 2002 Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching
Award
"Rusty" Simonds will receive the 2002 Chancellor's Distinguished
Teaching Award at the University of Massachusetts Boston commencement
exercises held on Saturday, June 1, at the Bayside Exposition Center,
10:30 a.m. Professor Simonds of the Political Science Department is
known for his consistent record of excellent teaching. He will be sharing
the award with Professor David Hunt of the History Department, who arrived
at the university the same year Simonds did.

- UMass Boston Plans Commemorative Activities
On Campus in Memory of September 11
On the first-year anniversary of September 11, UMass Boston will host
a series of on-campus events and a memorial service in remembrance
of lives lost during the terrorist attacks. The day will begin with
a bagpipe rendition of "Amazing Grace" on the University
Plaza at 8:45 a.m., followed by a procession, and a campus-wide moment
of silence. On a "Wall of Remembrance" banner displayed
in McCormack Hall's Ryan Lounge, members of the university community
will be able to record their thoughts, feelings, prayers, and poems.
The events also will include a faculty panel discussion and the Memorial
of Hope Service and Reception.
- UMass Boston Study Provides New
Data on Asian Americans and Voter Registration in Massachusetts
According to the 2000 Census, the Asian American population is the
fastest growing racial group in Massachusetts. Levels of Asian American
electoral participation and political clout, however, have not matched
the dramatic population growth. Serious gaps in voter eligibility
and registration rates are some of the challenges facing Asian Americans
in increasing political participation.

- $1.5 Million NSF Grant Pairs UMass Boston
Graduate Students with Middle Schoolers to Study Neponset River Watershed
Thanks to a $1.5 million National Science Foundation grant, middle schoolers
in Boston, Dedham, and Milton will be learning from University of Massachusetts
Boston math and science graduate students as they study the Neponset
River Watershed. All three communities are located in this watershed
area. " This project brings together our math and science graduate
students, including people from our Environmental, Coastal, and Ocean
Sciences Department and with guidance from our Graduate College of Education,
sends them into the community to help middle schoolers better understand
their own environment," said UMass Boston Chancellor Jo Ann Gora

- Boston Folk Festival to take place September
21 and 22
Among the thousands of ticketholders for the upcoming Boston Folk Festival
are fans from countries as far away as England, Canada, and Japan, and
states as far away as Alaska, Washington and California. What's the
big attraction? Now in its fifth year, the Boston Folk Festival offers
two large, outdoor stages, an indoor coffeehouse stage, a family stage--and
a floating, harbor-cruising stage.
- UMass Boston Study: Most Who Qualify
for Food Stamps Don't Get Them
A recent study by the Center for Social Policy at the McCormack Institute
at the University of Massachusetts Boston indicates that 61% of applicants
eligible for Food Stamps in 1999 chose not to apply. Despite need, Massachusetts
families are not taking advantage of this benefit, confirming a U.S.
Department of Agriculture study of 1999 Food Stamp participation rates
that places the Commonwealth's rate among the lowest in the nation.
According to USDA, only 43% of eligible participants were enrolled in
the Massachusetts program. Only one other state had a lower participation
rate.

- Senator John Kerry To Deliver Keynote
Address at Joiner Center's 20th Anniversary
On October 25, the University of Massachusetts Boston will mark twenty
years since the school's William Joiner Center for the Study of War
and Social Consequences first opened its doors. That day UMass Boston
Chancellor Jo Ann M. Gora and Senator John Kerry will host a commemorative
gala, which will be held at the nearby John F. Kennedy Presidential
Library at 6:00 p.m.

Hole Institution Join Forces to Educate
This year, the National Science Foundation (NSF) launched a major new
effort to increase the public’s knowledge of the ocean and how
it affects the atmosphere, land, and human activities. Appropriately
enough, part of this effort focuses on New England, where making a living
from the sea and embracing education are part of the region’s
historical legacies.
