The Summer Transportation Institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston is running its fourth edition this year, June 30-July 25, 2008. It is a free four-week non-residential program for upper middle and high school students in the Greater Boston area. The purpose is to increase awareness about opportunities and challenges in transportation-related careers. The Institute promotes teamwork, interest in science and engineering, communication, academic and computer skills through close interaction with university faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, projects, field trips, seminars, sports and recreation, presentations and workshops. The Institute is funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation through the state Executive Office of Transportation, and the University of Massachusetts Boston. In past editions, the Institute included field trips to the Volpe National Transportation Research Center, local aviation school and airports, meeting with the state Secretary of Transportation, and attending a Governor speech at the State House.
