UMass Boston Vice Chancellor Honored for Fundraising Leadership

Darrell Byers Earns Award from Education Council

Darrell C. Byers, vice chancellor for University Advancement at the University of Massachusetts Boston, was selected by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, District I, to receive the Eleanor Collier achievement and recognition award for "contributions to his organization and profession that reflect honor on CASE, education and the field of higher education administration.”  The award will be presented at the March CASE District 1 Conference at the John F. Kennedy Library.

“Under his leadership, Boston’s only public university has aggressively transformed its development and alumni relations efforts.  In doing so, Darrell has captured the philanthropic spirit and pride of UMass Boston’s many alumni and friends,” wrote John R. Hayes, Jr., director of individual giving at the UMass Memorial Foundation, and former associate vice chancellor for university advancement at UMass Boston, in his nomination of Byers for the award.

Hayes credited Byers, a West Roxbury resident, with growing UMass Boston’s private support over 200 percent in three years, developing the university’s alumni relations program, and launching new and successful fundraising efforts.

“This is a well-deserved award for Vice Chancellor Byers,” said J. Keith Motley, chancellor of UMass Boston. “We all congratulate him on his great work and look forward to even greater success in the future.”
